UMTS Call Flow Scenarios - An Overview of Circuit and Packet Call Flow Scenarios

For ease of understanding the Call Flow Scenarios will be split into 6 parts.

1. Node B Initialisation
2. Cell “Camp-on” / Location Update
3. Circuit Switched Call set-up

The following steps need to be executed in order for a mo call to complete
  • RRC Connection Setup
  • Service Request
  • Security Procedures (Identity / Authentication / Security mode)
  • Call Setup Request
  • Radio Link and RAB Configuration
  • Call Connection
4. Circuit Switched Call tear-down
The following steps need to be executed in order for the mobile to tear-down the call.
  • Initiate Call Release
  • Initiate Iu Release Procedure
  • Release Iu Connection to MSC for UE
  • Release RRC Connection to UE
  • Delete Radio Link Resources in UTRAN
  • Delete Radio Link Resources in UTRAN
5. Packet Switched Call set-up
The following steps need to be executed in order for a mo call to complete.
  • Establish an RRC connection to the UTRAN
  • Establish an Iu connection to the CN
  • Make an Attach Request
  • Carry out Security Procedures
  • Complete the Attach
  • Request PDP context activation
  • Set-up RAB’s for the connection
  • Create GTP connections and activate PDP Context at the GGSN
  • Data Transfer
6. Packet Switched Call tear-down
The following steps need to be executed in order for a mo call tear down to complete.
  • PDP Context Deactivate request from UE
  • Radio Link Setup
  • Iub Transport Bearer Setup
  • DCH-FP Synchronization
  • Connection Setup
  • Attach Procedure
  • Authentication and Security Procedures
  • PDP Context Activation Procedure
  • Radio Link and RAB Configuration
  • Data Transfer
